This particular Donald Byrd album cover is one of my favorite artwork designs of all time. The simplicity is amazing to me, as well as color combination, positive/negative space, direction of lines and shapes… all of it. In fact, the well-documented Blue Note designer Miles Reid was pretty much killing shit at the time. Below is a collage of some of his work… and mind you, computers and photoshop didn’t exist. So murderous. Here’s another cool link to some really dope jazz cover art from back in the day.
My dear homie, DJ Metrognome gave me this particular Donald Byrd album way back when (fellow music/design nerds give the best gifts). Much love to the good people of Indianapolis, Indiana!
